A skilled and sustainable workforce for a healthier Scotland

Postgraduate Support

NES Optometry is dedicated to continued professional development. We provide various services and delivery listed below:

Competency certificates

We are responsible for the General opthalmic services (GOS) Competency Training and Certificates.

Newly qualified optometrists who have recently completed the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) and those who have not provided Eyecare services in Scotland for more than two years, apply here for your GOS Competency Certificate

The competency certificate is a statement around your competence in slit-lamp examination, biomicroscopy, visual field interpretation and contact tonometry.

For more detailed information around applying for a competency certificate, please see our dedicated Turas Learn page.

Glaucoma skills day

This day involves a mix of simulation scenarios, discussions, VRICS and an interactive quiz. It is relevant to all current or future NESGAT and CGS optometrists and to those optometrists with a special interest in glaucoma.

Find out more and book your place on our Turas Learn page.

Mandatory training

Optometrists and ophthalmic medical practitioners working under GOS in Scotland are required to undertake annual mandatory training.

Find all training and general support on our dedicated Turas Learn page.

Paediatric skills day

Supported by Specialist Orthoptists and Optometrists, this day focuses on skills to improve your confidence in the assessment and management of paediatric patients, as well as patients with incomitant strabismus.

LaMP

The LaMP Programme will help practice staff to work together as a cohesive team, improving systems of patient management and helping you become a more effective clinician. The programme will explore your personal qualities and how they shape your interactions with colleagues and co-workers. Concentrating on your ability to work with others will make you more effective in delivering the best service for patients.
