Repurposing Turas Learn educational resources for social care

What is the Repurposing Turas Learn project?
One of the Social Care & Communities Directorate core projects is ‘Repurposing Turas Learn’. This project aims to review NHS Education for Scotland’s (NES) existing bank of high-quality learning resources and, through repurposing, ensure relevant resources are made accessible to the social care workforce.
Background
Reflecting NES’s remit to provide high quality education, training and workforce development for both health and social care, our strategy (2023-2026) states that:
“Where shared system, organisational or workforce learning needs are identified that span sectoral, professional, or occupational boundaries, we will develop learning interventions using a once for NES/ Once for Scotland and discipline neutral approach wherever possible”
Turas Learn hosts a wide range of learning resources such as eLearning modules, videos and webinar recordings. It also acts as the landing site to signpost to a range of training opportunities.
Many recently developed resources have been produced using the ‘Once for Scotland’ approach and are already appropriate for the social care workforce. However, many resources originally created for a healthcare audience hold value for the social care sector with some repurposing. ‘Repurposing’ refers to modifications to language and imagery to make relevant resources discipline neutral and ensure suitability for social care as well. Repurposing will provide access to wider educational opportunities for the social care workforce, supporting learning and professional development with the goal of facilitating augmentation of skills and confidence across the workforce.

What has been done?
We have undertaken a systematic review of all stand-alone e-learning packages, documents, videos and recorded webinars on Turas Learn.
After reviewing over 20,000 items, we identified:
- Over 500 resources that were already suitable for a social care audience.
- Over 200 resources that could be repurposed and then also be appropriate for a social care audience.
Our team are currently working closely with the content owners to make the necessary adaptations to these resources, getting feedback from external experts where necessary.
What next?
All the resources identified through Repurposing will be mapped to the Scottish Social Services Council’s CPL framework. This will allow work to improved navigation to these resources enabling learners from social care to easily identify resources relevant to them and their professional development.
We are currently conducting a review of all programmes of learning (where multiple learning resources sit together) and live training opportunities available through Turas Learn to identify what is already appropriate and any that would benefit from repurposing.
We are also creating a guidance resource that provides information about how to use more discipline neutral language and imagery when developing learning resources. This resource aims to facilitate colleagues across NES in the development of social care inclusive resources in the future.
