New online hub launched to support General Practitioner careers in Scotland
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) has launched mygpcareer.nhs.scot, a new online hub dedicated to supporting General Practitioners at every stage of their professional lives.
This latest enhancement to the NHS Scotland Careers website delivers on a key pledge in The Scottish Government’s General Practitioner Recruitment and Retention Action Plan 2024-2026 to create a clear, holistic, well-advertised online career pathway resource for GPs (Action 5).
Supporting the profession
The hub offers a single entry point for information on GP careers in Scotland. It links learning and development opportunities with clear guidance on the diverse routes available – from early career fellowships and portfolio roles to leadership positions and returning to practice.
Prof Nitin Gambhir, Postgraduate Dean at NHS Education for Scotland, said:
"General Practice is central to the future of our NHS, and supporting GPs throughout their careers is essential. This new hub provides a clear, accessible pathway linking training, development, and career opportunities, helping doctors to navigate a rewarding and sustainable career in General Practice in Scotland. By bringing this information together in one place, we are strengthening recruitment and retention and supporting a resilient GP workforce for the years ahead."
A focus on retention and culture
As well as mapping out career paths, the hub acts as a gateway to professional support. It signposts GPs to wellbeing resources and career advice, helping to navigate the pressures of the role.
This launch is just the first phase. The platform is designed to evolve, with plans to expand the features and enhance user experience based on feedback from the profession.
Dr Chris Provan, Chair of RCGP Scotland added:
"To build a sustainable workforce, we must ensure that our GPs feel valued and supported at every stage of their working lives. This hub is about more than just recruitment; it is about retention and culture. By providing a central gateway to wellbeing support, flexible working options, and career guidance, we are making it easier for GPs to build a long, fulfilling, and balanced career here in Scotland."
A collaborative effort
The hub was built through a partnership between the NES Workforce Infrastructure and Web Support teams, NES Medical Directorate, and NES’s Centre for Workforce Supply.
It was shaped by vital input from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Scotland, The Scottish Government, and a broad range of GP stakeholders to ensure it meets the real-world needs of the workforce.
