NES welcomes new chief executive

On 1 February, NES welcomed Karen Reid as our new Chief Executive, with acting CEO Stewart Irvine returning to his role of Medical Director.

NES Chairman David Garbutt said:

“I am delighted that we are to be joined by Karen, who is one of Scotland’s foremost leaders in public sector design and delivery, and scrutiny and improvement in health and social care. She is passionate about education and learning and committed to improving outcomes for people and communities."

Ms Reid said:

“I have worked extensively with NHS and social care colleagues over the years and I’m excited about the opportunities which working with NES presents.”

Ms Reid is currently the Chief Executive of Perth and Kinross Council. Prior to this, Karen held the post of Chief Executive of the Care Inspectorate.

During 2017, she also provided interim Chief Executive leadership of Education Scotland, and led both these organisations. During this period she also worked with NHS NES to use the TURAS architecture for the basis of a new digital approach in the Care Inspectorate.

She has been a member of the General Medical Council Scotland Advisory Group, the University of Dundee University Court and Chair of the university Audit Committee.
