Remote Health Monitoring and Consulting

Over the past year there has been an increase in uptake of remote monitoring and consultation in health and care. The growth of Remote Consulting and Remote Health Pathways has given people more options to access health and social care services safely and securely. They offer access to the right support at the right time from the right person.

To support the work of these programmes NES has been working in collaboration with the Scottish Government Technology Enabled Care (TEC) Programme to provide a range of resources for staff to feel confident and supported while using this technology.

Two new sites are available on Turas Learn for Remote Health Pathways and Remote Consulting including Near Me to help health and social care providers offer wider access to their services as part of ‘business as usual’.

Remote Health Pathways

Remote Health Pathways is the use of digital monitoring technology to enable people to receive, record and relay information about their health and wellbeing in real time. It is used to guide self-management and to support the health and care team in their treatment and care planning.

The Remote Health Pathways site has a range of resources to support practitioners and organisations to provide safe and effective solutions for health condition management. Several key priority digital pathways have already been developed including Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), COVID-19 and Heart Failure with more in development. Each topic has tailored resources including information leaflets, quick guides, short videos and user guides helping practitioners to use remote monitoring technology to better support patients manage their health and wellbeing.

Remote Consulting

Remote consulting is an effective and convenient way for people to engage with health and social care services safely and securely by accessing the support they need without meeting face-to-face. Instead they are able to stay in the comfort of their own home using simple technology to access a service, for example over the phone, via video link or online.  This provides greater access to health and care services and offers more choice and flexibility.

The Remote Consulting site has a range of resources on telephone, video (Near Me), and asynchronous consulting. Resources include; telephone consulting skills, getting started using Near Me, and what is asynchronous consulting.

These sites and resources are continuously refreshed and updated in line with new developments in this area. Contact Pamela.dimberline@nhs.scot for further information.
