Pre-hospital simulation centre launch

In October, Karen Wilson, director of nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals (NMAHP) and Dr Maria Pollard, associate director, attended the opening of a new cutting-edge facility.

The pre-hospital simulation centre at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) Lanarkshire campus, offers an excellent range of high fidelity simulation opportunities for healthcare students involved in:

  • paramedic science
  • nursing
  • midwifery
  • health and social care

The centre will allow students to develop clinical skills in a safe environment with the challenges of complex scenarios. The suites recreate indoors and outside settings with the distractions, hazards and complications of real-life situations.

Working alongside NES and Scottish Ambulance Service, UWS is in the second year of delivering BSc paramedic science. In addition to theory, practice-based education is based with Scottish Ambulance Service and in a range of associated health and social care settings across NHS Ayrshire and Arran, NHS Dumfries and Galloway and NHS Lanarkshire.

On the day, paramedic students demonstrated the new technology and simulation suites. Also hosting a charity CPR-athon, teaching other students and staff CPR training in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
