Neonatal learning sessions to continue in 2024

In October 2023, the NES maternity and neonatal team introduced monthly neonatal learning sessions. This was in response to the recognition that neonates is a very popular specialty.

With pressures in clinical areas and time constraints on many clinical educators, it’s important that both registrants and non-registrants within their first one to two years in neonatology have access to support and learning opportunities.

Having now hosted three successful sessions, a further programme up until summer 2024 has launched with neonatal consultants, NES educators and Higher Education institution (HEI) partners teaching on a variety of topics – all of which have been requested in feedback.

The sessions have evolved too, and the maternity and neonatal team have been delighted to be joined by midwives from hospital and community settings to learn, given the relevance of the topics to their areas of work.

The aim of the learning sessions was to provide a suite of resources that clinical educators in the boards could use for training their own staff. To support that, all sessions were recorded and are freely available on the NES Vimeo channel.

Kate Boyle, Principal Educator: Women, Children, Young People and Families, NES said:

“We are lucky to have the support of experts from the neonatal world who are willing to teach - however we would expect nothing less from the wonderful perinatal community in Scotland!”

The neonatal education sessions are held on the first Wednesday of each month from 14:00 to 14:45.
