Naloxone emergency supply service

In collaboration with the Scottish Drugs forum (SDF), NES Pharmacy has launched a suite of resources to support the service which can be accessed through Turas Learn.

Background

Scottish Government and Community Pharmacy Scotland have agreed that a new national service will be implemented to provide emergency access to supplies of naloxone.

The Drug Death Taskforce report published in July 2022 contained an action for all community pharmacies to hold naloxone for administration in an emergency to people who use drugs.

The service is due to start on 30 October 2023. By holding a supply of naloxone, the community pharmacy network will support increased access so that it can be used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

NES Pharmacy provides education for pharmacy teams across Scotland.

An e-learning module for naloxone emergency supply is now available for community pharmacy teams on Turas Learn. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page has been developed to answer common questions asked by pharmacy teams.

The NES Pharmacy team are also running webinars to support the implementation of the service with input from Scottish Drugs Forum, Community Pharmacy Scotland and pharmacists with real-life experience of administering Naloxone.

Details of how to register can be found on Turas Learn at Pharmacy Naloxone Emergency Supply Service.
