Keeping up to date with the Knowledge Network

A key part of evidence-based practice and improving care is keeping up to date with the latest research and clinical developments. Making time to find material and sift out what is relevant can be difficult. The Current Awareness section of the Knowledge Network (TKN) can help.

TKN has information and advice to help users keep up to date more easily.

The Current Awareness section contains guidance and links to useful resources. The main sections on the refreshed tab are:

Current Awareness Bulletins curated lists of relevant journal articles and reports on specific topics. The bulletins are developed by NHS Scotland librarians and staff can sign up to get new editions as they are produced.

Setting up alerts It is possible to set up table of contents and topic alerts from favourite journals, and there are free services available to help staff get information sent to their inboxes.

Alerts can also be set up in databases which allow users to save specific searches and receive alerts whenever new material is added.

Read by QxMD - this free service (available in app and web version) searches the large biomedical database PubMed for article information. Users can create personal collections and follow others. It is possible to set up links between Read by QxMD and the subscription resources on the Knowledge Network, allowing for easy access to materials. Full details are available on the alert pages.

Managing References This section includes information on RefWorks Reference Management software as well as links to the referencing advice on the Turas Learn Skills for Learning at Work site and a Sway on Referencing.

Access to some resources require an NHS Scotland OpenAthens account.
