Health and social care staff in the NHS and Scottish local authorities, and those working with them in the third and independent sectors, can access Barbour for free via the Knowledge Network with an NHSScotland OpenAthens username.

Barbour is a one stop document library that helps  businesses and organisations keep up to date with legal and policy requirements they need to keep running and stay compliant over a range of areas.

This includes:

  • Up to date information in one place for your peace of mind, including energy, control of contractors, risk assessment, repair and maintenance, workplace hazards, fire and security
  • Access to over 1600 British Standards Documents e.g. ISO8001 (normally cost £300 each for single use access)
  • Briefings, employee factsheets and technical guides provide concise information and best practice on a range of topics to help you become an expert and get the message out to your organisation
  • Toolbox talks – fully editable PowerPoint presentations and handouts you can use with your staff
  • Model policies – templates you can build on to save time creating and updating your own
  • Monthly webinars – for CPD, engaging and informative webinars

during the COVID-19 pandemic Barbour has been a useful resource for organisations who need practical support to follow constantly changing government and health guidance and advice.

Go to the Knowledge Network, select the Barbour Index link under More information sources.  Under Institution search for NHS Scotland then enter your NHSScotland OpenAthens username.

As part of the service, Barbour have added a Help Centre hub to enable users to get the most from our Barbour subscription. This self-service area, located in the Help Tab on Barbour, is packed with videos, PDF’s, and PowerPoint files to answer any questions you may have about how to use the service.
