Introduction to Flu e-Learning

A new flu e-learning resource has been developed in partnership with Public Health Scotland (PHS).

Introduction to Flu includes 4 units:

  • Seasonal flu
  • Legal aspects of vaccination administration
  • The Scottish adult flu immunisation programme
  • The Scottish child and school immunisation programme

The resource is designed to support staff involved with the delivery of the Seasonal Flu Immunisation Programme in Scotland, including:

  • New vaccinators (both registered and health care support workers)
  • Returning staff (or redeployed staff) who may have participated in vaccination delivery previously but perhaps not for some time
  • Current, experienced vaccination staff

Units are designed to offer flexibility of learning and can be completed fully or on an individual basis dependent on learning needs.

Colleagues new to vaccination practice or returning staff who have not participated in vaccination delivery for some time may find it useful to complete all 4 units. Current, experienced vaccinators may utilise selected units as an update, where units or sections are completed as required.

It is advised you discuss your individual learning needs with your employer to ensure you complete the appropriate units.

New and returning vaccinators may also need to complete foundation resource Promoting Effective Immunisation Practice (PEIP). More experienced vaccinators can utilise the Knowledge Self Appraisal Tool to assess existing knowledge against PHEs 2018 National Minimum Standards and core Curriculum for Immunisation Training to enable PEIP to be tailored to your specific learning needs.

It is important that all vaccinators refer to the Green Book, Chapter 19 on Influenza and any local learning requirements set out by your employer prior to undertaking any vaccinations.

Proficiency Documents

Before you undertake vaccination practice you need to demonstrate you have achieved the required knowledge and skills.  NES and PHS have developed proficiency assessment documents for registered healthcare practitioners and for healthcare support workers.

These proficiency assessment documents should be used in practice with your supervisor/line manager and will allow you to demonstrate proficiency of both Flu immunisation and COVID-19 immunisation.
