Clinical Wash Hand Basin animation Update
Background
In August 2023, the NES Healthcare Built Environment (HBE) team launched their Clinical Hand Wash basin animation, developed in collaboration with ARHAI at NHS Scotland Assure, as part of a wider commission. A supporting poster was also developed.
About the animation
This animation describes the dos and donts of clinical wash hand basins (sinks) – their intended purpose, water associated infection risks and what we all can do together to reduce this risk.
The animation promotes best practice for all staff within healthcare settings when using the clinical wash hand basins and encourages all healthcare staff to "Think sink, think splash, think safety!"
The animation illustrates:
- the infection risks associated with the incorrect use of sinks in terms of patient harm
- what we can do together to reduce this risk to ensure safer healthcare-built environments for us and our patients
We all a have a part to play in ensuring the safety of patients, whatever our role.
Impact of the animation
The animation has been a success with over 4,000 views on X (formerly Twitter) in the first 24 hours, where it was picked up and shared, by the President of the Infection Prevention Society.
The animation featured in two key presentations at the 2023 Infection Prevention Society Annual Conference by Dr Mike Weinbren and Dr Jimmy Walker, both well-known and respected figures in water safety community, as well as a poster presentation by NES/NHS Scotland Assure ARHAI delegates at the same conference.
The animation continues to attract attention with requests to use the animation coming from various NHS England Trusts and more recently, a request by NHS England National Infection Prevention and Control team, to use the animation.
What’s next
Building on this successful ARHAI/NES collaboration we have further commissioned animations to be developed over the next year, including design and handover of a safe water and drainage system.
