A day of celebration

The Allied Health Professions (AHP) team have been busy celebrating AHP’s Day which took place on Saturday 14 October.

Joanne Gibson, Senior Educator said:

“It’s been a very productive and busy week for AHPs in NES but there have been fantastic opportunities to promote the themes of the day to #appreciate, #celebrate, #inspire and #connect.

“I’d encourage you to read about the activities that took place.”

AHP’s day 2023 activity

Here are some of the activities that took place in the week leading up to AHPs day and on the day ranging from resources launches to videos, animations and communities of practice.

Message of thanks from Gareth Hill

Gareth, associate director and lead AHP, NMAHP, published a video of thanks. In the video he notes that AHPs Day falls on a Saturday this year. A reminder that the workforce tirelessly dedicates themselves to the health and wellbeing of our communities, even on weekends.

Launch of AHP Practice Educator Toolkit

This toolkit is part of wider work to develop the capability and capacity within the AHP workforce to become practice educators supporting and delivering AHP Practice Based Learning (PrBL).

The toolkit is a call to action for AHPs to join the practice educator workforce in Scotland. It details the steps AHPs in Scotland should take to develop knowledge, skills, confidence, and behaviours to become practice educators supporting our AHP students on placement.

Access the toolkit on Turas or visit the NHS Scotland careers website for more information on becoming an AHP practice educator.

AHP's behind the Scenes

Newly developed videos to inspire the next generation of AHP’s have been published on the NHS Scotland career website.

The videos demonstrate a day in the life of:

AHP's in Public Health

Embedding Public Health into Practice is a newly designed resource for AHPs working with children and young people. This resource supports staff to understand their role and contribution to public health, prevention and early intervention.

To launch the resource a webinar took place with over 60 AHPs in attendance, sharing insights from their own practice in Public Health.

Check out the new resource and please share widely!

AHP Communities of Practice

AHPs celebrated the communities of practice which enable the professions to connect with other across Scotland, share practice and provide a platform for learning and sharing.

AHP Preceptorship

The AHP team introduced the concept of Preceptorship to its AHP audience on social media. Social media posts were created with word clouds generated by the Preceptorship National Working Group to introduce AHP preceptorship.

It is a period of structured support and development designed to improve confidence of AHP practitioners as they transition into a new role. For example, starting your first role, moving into a new role or speciality, returning from maternity leave, and even moving to Scotland for a new job.

AHP Students

The AHP team are delighted to be hosting two Occupational Therapy Students on placement at NES. Our two students collaborated with other AHP students in Scotland to develop a social media appreciation post and video for AHP Practice Educators across Scotland.

Practice based learning recovery

On Thursday 12 October, Ailidh Hunter, Senior Educator, Practice Education, NES attended the National Association of Educators in Practice (NEAP) conference in Birmingham. She was there to present her poster, Practice-based Learning Recovery in the Allied Health Professions: Modern, Diverse and Sustainable.

Ailidh shared the learning and outcomes of 12 projects, which took place between September 2021 and March 2023. As a result, the projects increased capacity of AHP PrBl placement opportunities by 14,000 hours.

About AHP’s Day

#appreciate – appreciating their skills and impact on care and support in local communities.

#inspire – inspiring our future workforce and ensuring we continue to grow an AHP workforce fit for the future.

#connect – connecting with others across the system to share ambitions and aspirations.

14 professions come under the AHP banner:
