Karen Reid took up the position of NES Executive Board member on her appointment to NES as Chief Executive on 1 February 2021.

Karen held the position of Chief Executive of Perth and Kinross Council from September 2018 and was also the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE) portfolio holder for education, public protection and early learning and childcare.

Her past roles have included the Chief Executive of the Care Inspectorate and the interim Chief Executive leadership of Education Scotland.  Karen has led the partnership with Health Improvement Scotland (HIS) to develop the new rights based National Care Standards for Health and Social Care.  She has previously worked with NHS Education Scotland (NES) to use the TURAS architecture for the basis of a new digital approach in the Care Inspectorate.

Karen has been a member of the University Court at the University of Dundee, Chair of the University Audit Committee, member of the Scottish Education Council and COVID Education Recovery Group.  During her tenure at the Care Inspectorate she sat on the General Medical Council Scotland Advisory Group.  She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Karen is qualified in accountancy and communications /public relations and has formal certification in international regulation, coaching and mediation.
