Information Governance

As the volume and complexity of information held by NHSScotland increases, so do the risks to confidentiality, IT security and freedom of information.

NES has worked in partnership with the Scottish Government's e-Health Directorate to support information handling practice by developing the following resources:

Information Governance Competency Framework
The Information Governance Competency Framework sets out the skills and knowledge required by all NHSScotland staff for effective and safe information governance.  The competences are presented at four levels ranging from minimum requirements at Foundation to Advanced competences for specialist Information Governance staff.

Please see the Useful Links section at the bottom of this page for more information.

Information Handling in Practice
NES has recently launched Information Handling in Practice - a new e-learning resource to help health and social care employers and their staff meet mandatory learning requirements in this important area of professional practice.  The module is designed for staff for whom handling personal information is an important part of their role.  Information Handling in Practice is an assessed module addressing the Intermediate standards set out in the IG Competency Framework.

Safe Information Handling
Safe Information Handling is a companion to Information Handling in Practice addressing the NHSScotland IG competences at Foundation level. The assessed module is designed to assist clinicians, managers, administrators, support staff and others in understanding requirements for data sharing and confidentiality.

Information Handling in Practice and Safe Information Handling are both available through local Health Board e-learning sites including learnPro. More information about Information Handling in Practice and Safe Information Handling is available in the Useful Links section below.

Information about registering and accessing learnPro can be found at the learnPro NHS home page.
