Antenatal Inequalities

A Refreshed Framework for Maternity Care in Scotland (pdf) sets out the principles and service descriptors designed to improve the quality of maternity care. The development of the Refreshed Framework has taken place under the auspices of the Maternity Services Action Group (MSAG) which is the overarching strategic group for maternity services.

The aim of the refreshment process is to strengthen the contribution maternity care makes to improving maternal and infant health and to reducing health inequalities.

The refreshment of the framework has drawn heavily on the evidence, recommendations and ambitions of the Healthcare Quality Strategy, the Early Years Framework, Getting it Right for Every Child and the Equally Well Implementation Plan. This policy landscape delivers a cohesive message which is that services should focus on:

  • Person centred, safe and effective care
  • Early intervention and prevention
  • Improved collaboration between services

Forthcoming workforce development activity, delivered by NES and NHS Health Scotland, will be aligned with this policy landscape and result in the development of outcome focussed educational solutions which respond to the intersecting educational activities expressed within:

Bespoke educational tools will be developed as necessary to meet the specific educational focus of each policy.
