Safe Management of Care Equipment

This short video demonstrates the safe management of care equipment in a care home environment, however these principles are transferable in health care settings.

This resource is part of the foundation layer of the Scottish Infection Prevention and Control Education Pathway.  Further information about the pathway is available on the pathway webpage.


The video is aligned to the National Infection Prevention and Control Manual, Chapter 1 on SICPs and explores Safe Management of Care Equipment.

The video focuses on the principles of cleaning equipment with practical demonstrations of how to clean specific pieces of equipment.  The video provides practical application of knowledge and skills to aid learners in acute, community and care settings.

Target audience

All registered nurses, healthcare support workers and care staff working in health and social care settings.

  • Classifications of care equipment e.g. single use, single person use, re-usable invasive equipment and communal equipment
  • Step by step cleaning procedures for communal equipment with examples shown in relation to commodes, hoists and hoist slings
  • Decontamination schedules
  • Appropriate use of personal protective equipment when carrying out cleaning of care equipment
