HAI Acute Hospital Admission Screening

This module replaces the NES: MRSA Screening module. The module is part of the intermediate layer of the Scottish Infection Prevention and Control Education Pathway.

The NES HAI Acute Hospital Admission Screening module is based on the following Health Protection Scotland (HPS) publications:

  • The Protocol for CRA MRSA Screening National Rollout in Scotland (2013)
  • Toolkit for the Early Detection, Management and Control of carbapenemase-producing enterobacteriacease in Scottish acute settings
  • National Infection Prevention and Control Manual

HAI Acute Hospital Admission Screening module provides learning for acute staff on the screening process for MRSA and CPE. It covers completing Clinical Risk Assessments (CRA) and taking the correct swabs or other specimens from patients at high risk of carrying MRSA or CPE.

Target Audience

This module is aimed at healthcare workers, including students, in acute hospital settings involved in:

  • patient admission assessments including CRAs
  • taking admission samples to be tested in the Microbiology Laboratory

On completion of the module you will be able to:

  • correctly complete a clinical risk assessment (CRA)
  • apply the CRA to identify high risk patients requiring isolation on admission
  • explain the importance of MRSA and CPE screening to patients and staff
  • correctly take microbiology swabs for testing
  • answer frequently asked questions
