Domestic Services Education

NHSScotland has long recognised the important role that Domestic Services play in supporting front line healthcare

In addition to providing patients with a clean, comfortable and reassuring setting, domestic service staff ensure a well maintained environment, preserving the life of the building fabric, furnishing and equipment.  This ultimately inspires confidence in patients and visitors, as well as staff.

Scoping and Evaluation

During 2012/13, research was carried out to clarify and review training programmes, education provision, policy and procedures as well as identification of key learning needs of domestic service workers that cleans and decontaminate the NHS healthcare environment. DVD Educational Resource

Following the recommendation in the evaulation report, NHS Education for Scotland in partnership with Health Facilities Scotland developed a DVD for domestic service workforce providing education and training in infection prevention and control and cleaning of the healthcare environment. Framework and Workbook

Health Facilities Scotland supported by NHS Education for Scotland were asked by the Scottish Executive HAI Task Force to develop a National Educational Framework for Domestic Services.  This subsequently resulted in the development and publication of a range of workbooks which are available on the Health Facilities Scotland website.
