Pharmacists working in GP Practices

Pharmacists working in General Practice

GP Pathway

NES Pharmacy has developed a learning pathway for pharmacists employed in GP practice to deliver the Pharmacotherapy service as outlined in the GMS 2018 contract. Click on the image above to watch our animation.

The pathway consists of 4 elements:

  • A 13 module e-learning package ‘Fundamentals of GP practice’. Pharmacists working in general practice can access these modules via the GP Clinical Pharmacist page of TURAS Learn. Available here
Details of module content together with a guide for suggested module completion for Pharmacists with experience of working in other sectors is detailed here.
  • A series of 3 national bespoke training events over an 18-month period where Pharmacists from across Scotland learn together. These events are multi-professional in delivery and the content is based on a training needs analysis for each cohort of Pharmacists attending.
  • Therapeutic e-learning modules covering cardiovascular, respiratory, diabetes and pain. These are available at the GP Clinical Pharmacist page on TURAS Learn, available here
  • Completion of an Advanced Competency & Capability framework which is linked to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Faculty Framework. Completed portfolios can be submitted for assessment in August and December each year.

Pharmacists are entered onto the learning pathway by local Health Boards Leads working in collaboration with NES.
