Pre Course Information

Some pre course reading is recommended for participants.

Participants are required to bring pens, notepads and the Childsmile Programme Manual to the training course.  Note taking throughout the training and home study through further reading, e.g. Policy/research relevant to the Childsmile Programme, is also strongly recommended for successful completion of the training portfolio.

Training Portfolio

It is a mandatory requirement of the course that participants complete a training portfolio, consisting of assignments relating to each of the six modules delivered over six days. A sample copy (for information only- NOT TO BE USED ON TRAINING)can be found on the Childsmile Training Resources page.

It is anticipated that a minimum of 30 hours should be given to completion of the training portfolio; thereafter it will be the participants responsibility to forward this onto NHS Education for Scotland for marking and certification.  Whilst the workplace can be a very busy environment, it is recommended that participants are given a minimum of 20 hours protected study time for completion of the training portfolio.  This should be at the discretion of line managers and may involve both home and work study opportunities.

On successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with 35 hours of verifiable CPD.

To enhance and consolidate student learning, there will be mandatory time limits for return of the training portfolio, this will be 12 weeks maximum from the first day of the training course.  Trainers will issue participants with return dates on the first and last days of the course.

Direct Observational Procedure (DOP)

Dental Nurses will also require to complete a reflective diary for their fluoride varnish practical sessions with guidance from their mentor.  A sample blank copy (for information only- NOT TO BE USED ON TRAINING) of the reflective diary can be found on the Childsmile Training Resources page.  This will involve undertaking clinical training in the primary care setting/nursery/school with a mentor, who has been given information and guidance from the Childsmile Programme with regards to their roles and responsibilities when training the Dental Nurse in fluoride application.  Guidance for mentors can be found by clicking on the Mentor Guidance link below.
