Oral Health Improvement - Caring for Smiles

Better Oral Care for Dependent Older People.

Caring for Smiles is Scotland's national oral health promotion, training and support programme, which aims to improve the oral health of older people, particularly those living in care homes.

 The training has been developed for:

  • Care Staff
  • Nursing Staff
  • Oral Health Champions
  • Care Home Managers

 The Caring for Smiles training award has two levels:

  • Foundation is credit rated at SCQF Level 5 with 2 Notional credit points. It covers the importance of every day oral care, with a practical session including introduction to risk assessment, care planning daily documentation and referral.
  • Intermediate is credit rated at SCQF Level 6 with 2 Notional credit points. It re-iterates the importance of daily oral care, focussing on dementia skills, palliative care and end of life care, with a practical focus on risk assessment and documentation.

The Caring for Smiles Community of Practice has restricted tutor pages as well as general participant pages. The Community is for accessing course information and materials, to encourage best practice in oral care, evoke discussion and enhance partnership working in NHS Boards throughout Scotland.
