Approved Medical Practitioners
Introduction
The Mental Health (Care &Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 came into force in October 2005. It affects the work of all health and social care professionals in Scotland.
This site is developed as part of a training programme through which psychiatrists can receive accreditation as approved medical practitioners to meet Section 22 approval. Section 22 - approved medical practitioners will be those who have undertaken requisite training in the Act. They must be registered medical practitioners who are either:
- members or fellows of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, or
- have four years’ continuous experience in the specialty of psychiatry and are sponsored by their local medical director.
The site reviews specific areas of the Act and explores priority areas for approved medical practitioners.
After reviewing the material provided, psychiatrists wishing to gain Section 22 approval must complete a self-assessment exercise. Successful completion of the exercise will enable them to receive a certificate which they will have to produce on attendance at the Approved Medical Practitioners Part 2 Training. For further information on Approved Medical Practitioners Training please contact Angela Currie at The Royal College of Psychiatrists on 0131 220 2910 or alternatively email acurrie@scotdiv.rcpsych.ac.uk. Please note that a registration form for Part 2 training and your certificate will be sent to you shortly following successful completion of the online self-assessment exercise.
In addition to the approved medical practitioner-specific objectives, it is also hoped that the site will act as a knowledge resource for other people interested in the application of the Act.
