Pandemic Flu H1N1

Current Educational Solutions to Support NHS Boards

The Scottish Government is working closely with the NHS Boards to manage the current H1N1 flu outbreak.  NHS Education for Scotland, in collaboration with Health Protection Scotland, has responded to requests for educational resources to support NHS Boards.

1. The following resources are currently available

  • can be used to augment existing training programmes in NHS Boards
  • contains details specific to H1N1 strain of flu
  • has been reviewed by Health Protection Scotland's flu team
  • contains a check list of identified competencies to be achieved/confirmed (based on Health Protection Agency standards)

PDF version

The resource was produced as a PDF which opens with Adobe Reader in order to protect the content and avoid anything being removed or altered. The document can be viewed in 'full screen' mode and navigated through in exactly the same way as a Powerpoint slide show.

PowerPoint version

Following requests, a solution to enable the resource to be presented in PowerPoint has been provided.

The resource has been copied into a PowerPoint presentation template to allow increased flexibility for local delivery.  Please note, however, this is a very large file at 16MB and is likely to take some time to download, depending on your local network.  Double click on the link below and save the file to your computer before proceeding with the download.

1.11 Critical Care Education Resource

NES has been asked to support NHS Boards in building critical care capacity through the provision of educational resources.

Education and training may be required at many levels within hospitals, including 'up-skilling' staff from general wards, to 'refresher' type education for staff with previous experience in high dependency / critical care. In addition, robust assessment of knowledge and skills will be required to ensure patient safety is maintained.

NHS Lothian has developed an educational resource based on the NES critical care competency framework, to prepare and support staff within critical care areas. The competencies are available via the website www.criticalcare.scot.nhs.uk and can be accessed and used by Boards to support education and training for critical care staff.

The website includes sections on respiratory, cardiac, neurology, GI and liver, renal and patient safety.  Each section includes appropriate information and includes assessment of knowledge and practice. Assessment tools are integral to the website and reports can be generated and recorded.

The critical care competencies were developed by Education Facilitators within NHS Lothian and have been used in paper form for a number of years.
