Mental Health and Learning Disabilities

Learning Byte Living healthy Living well

This Learning Byte is for students not only of learning disabilities nursing, but also those from all other fields of nursing – adult, mental health and children’s. It will also be relevant for any staff who work with people with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD).

The Learning Byte provides a brief guide to physical health and well-being of people with PMLD. On completion you should:

* understand the increased and different health needs of people with PMLD and critically reflect on their health promotion needs

* reflect on health inequalities for people with learning disabilities and explore strategies to minimise them

* understand how people with learning disabilities may experience barriers to accessing mainstream health and care services

* recognise a range of health needs experienced by people with PMLD.
