Dementia
Promoting Excellence: A framework for all health and social services staff working with people with dementia, and their families and carers.
Dementia is a national clinical priority. Scotland's National Dementia Strategy was published in June 2010 and as part of the strategy, NES/SSSC developed the Promoting Excellence Framework which was launched in 2011. Click here to view our learning resources
Values Based Practice
The 10 Essential Shared Capabilities for Mental Health Practice Learning Materials (Scotland)
The main emphasis of the learning materials is supporting cultural change in services by promoting values-based, person-centred and recovery-focused practice. The learning is relevant to people in all roles and settings who are involved in mental health work. The materials, facilitators Toolkit and evaluation of the dissemination of the learning can be accessed in our publications section.
Pre-registration preparation
NES worked with colleagues from higher education institutions and services to produce a national framework for the pre-registration nursing programmes in 2008 and we are continuing to carry out a programme of work to support implementation. The Framework will be updated in 2011.
Mental Health Legislation
Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003
This educational resource is designed to prepare frontline staff for the implementation of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment)(Scotland) Act 2003,
One of the key issues arising in relation to the operation of the act has been around staff anxieties about the tribunal process. To enhance their understanding of these processes and enable them to participate more confidently in tribunal hearings we have developed a training DVD. To obtain a copy of the DVD contact the Mental Health Administrator at mentalhealth@nes.scot.nhs.uk or 0131 220 8607.
Adult Support and Protection
The Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 200, the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 and the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 have introduced significant changes in the ways that adults considered to be at risk of harm are supported in health and social care services. Respecting and Protecting Adults at Risk in Scotland - legislation and practice: An Educational Resource is designed to support front line staff in the appropriate application of the Acts.
Mental Health Recovery
NES/SRN Realising Recovery: A National Framework for Learning and Training in Recovery Focused Practice
The Framework was published and launched in September 2007. As well as providing guidance regarding the development of training mental health workers in recovery focused practice the document aims to highlight to people who use mental health services and their friends, families and carers what they should expect from mental health workers.
Realising Recovery Learning Materials
The Realising Recovery materials have been developed by NHS Education for Scotland and the Scottish Recovery Network and have been designed to support mental health workers to develop their recovery focused practice. They build on The 10 Essential Shared Capabilities (Scotland) learning materials and are designed to provide further learning to enable mental health workers to work alongside service users as they create their own unique recovery journeys.
