Maternity Care

Maternity Care Support Workers

Across NHS Scotland the provision of maternity services and the models of maternity care are undergoing significant review and change. Factors driving changes include NHS healthcare policy, such as the Refreshed Framework for Maternity Care in Scotland, workforce and population demographics, reconfiguration of services, and a commitment to providing greater choice for women.

In 2008, following three years of scoping and developmental work, a national education programme was commissioned which linked to a core competency framework to establish higher level support workers in maternity care. There are now around 80 trained or being trained through these programmes across Scotland. The role was evaluated in 2011 and a report published.
