Introduction

This clip explains how the videos provided on this page will assist health and social care staff to provide a safe and clean environment in the prevention and control of infection. The induction provides information to people new to the care environment (comprising 3 videos) and the main programme contains 15 comprehensive videos that focus on areas of infection prevention and control examined in more detail including common infections, outbreak management and all 10 Standard Infection Control Precautions.

Induction

The induction video gives an introduction to infection control for people new to the care environment and offers opportunites to pause and reflect on how the information can be applied to the leaners workplace setting. Evaluation templates are available on the Preventing Infection in Care webpage of this website.

Induction - Introduction to SICPs

In all care settings, preventing and controlling infection is vital to protect the people you care for, the safety of visitors, your colleagues, and your own health. It’s crucial that as a provider of care you have the knowledge and skills to help prevent risk of infection and provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment. This induction video introduces you to the ten standard infection control precautions often referred to as SICPs.

Causes of Infection

This clip examines micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses, how they grow and spread. It also examines the Chain of Infection which are the simple and practical steps that can be taken to break the chain and prevent infections.

Specific Infections

This clip considers specific infections, what they are, their symptoms, how they are transmitted and how they are managed and controlled.

Outbreak of Infection

This clip explores an outbreak of infection scenario including how the infection can be spread rapidly and stringent control measures which can be used to control the outbreak.

Introduction to Standard Infection Control Precautions

This clip explores in detail the Standard Infection Control Precautions (SICPs) and the necessary precautions that all health and social care staff must adhere to, to reduce the risk of transmission of micro-organisms from both recognised and unrecognised sources of infection.

Hand Hygiene

This clip demonstrates the correct way to wash hands with liquid soap and warm water or with alcohol based hand rub to prevent the spread of infections.

Personal Protective Equipment

This clip explores Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which is a requirement of health and safety legislation to protect the wearer from direct contact with splashes of blood and/or body fluids. It is used to protect people being cared for and staff to reduce the opportunities for spreading infections.

Respiratory and Cough Hygiene

This clip explores the most common mode of transmission of infection through droplets from coughs and sneezes and examines the more direct route of transmission through hand and surface contact.

Safe Management of Blood and Body Fluid Spillages

This clip explores the cleaning of spillages of blood and body fluids which should be considered as potentially infectious while observing SICPs to prevent further contamination.

Occupational Exposure Management

This clip considers the steps that can be taken to minimise and deal with any exposure to sharp items of substances which have the potential to be harmful.

Safe Management of the Care Environment

This clip informs how to protect against risks associated with cleaning of the environment.

Safe Management of Care Equipment

This clip considers the maintenance and cleaning of equipment to prevent and control the risk of infection.

Patient Placement (for those you care for)

This clip examines a scenario where an individual has an infection and considers the possible source and route of transmission in order to institute appropriate control measures which may include seperating an individual.

Safe Management of Linen

Linen has been shown to harbour large numbers of micro-organisms. This clip considers washing, drying and storing linen correctly in order to prevent and control the spread of infection.

Safe Management of Waste

This clip examines the safe disposal of all waste by those involved in the handling, transporting and processing of it and will include risk assessments.

Other Preventable Measures

This clip explores the public health issue we face due to antibiotic resistance and examines how effective antibiotic stewardship can help to reduce antibiotic resistance.
