MRSA Screening Programme

This e-learning programme is based on the protocol for CRA MRSA Screening National Rollout in Scotland (HPS, 2011). This document outlines the minimum level of screening the Scottish Government Health Directorates require NHS boards to undertake.

Target Audience

The target audience for this course includes: Senior Charge Nurses, Registered Nurses, Healthcare Support Workers, Facilities Staff, Medical Staff, Administrative Staff and MRSA Screening Project Teams.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the learner should be able to:

  • Give a definition of MRSA
  • Describe the rationale for MRSA screening
  • Identify the patient areas that are subject to MRSA screening
  • Apply the national CRA to detect MRSA
  • Describe how to take a nasal, perineal and throat swab
  • Describe action to be taken following a positive MRSA result.
