Background
Why is hand hygiene important?
- Hands move microorganisms from one place to another.
- Good hand hygiene protects patients/clients, staff, people and children receiving care, and visitors.
- In healthcare settings in particular, whether in hospitals or the wider community, hand hygiene is the single most important activity for preventing the spread of infection from one person to another.
- It is, therefore, essential that all staff that come into contact with patients, directly or indirectly through equipment, food or the environment, understand the importance of good hand hygiene practices and adhere to them.
Target Group
The programme is aimed at promoting hand hygiene for all healthcare workers and can be used:
- As a training resource within organisations providing healthcare
- As an educational tool for Higher/Further Education Institutions in undergraduate programmes
- By any healthcare worker wishing to update, refresh or challenge personal hand hygiene knowledge and practice, carers in the community, social services, voluntary and independent agencies
Course Information
On completion of the programme you will be able to:
- explain the importance of hand hygiene
- list the most appropriate times to perform hand hygiene
- relate the WHOs five moments for hand hygiene to your circumstances
- descibe the three different kinds of hand hygiene
- list the steps for performing hand washing
- explain resons for non-compliance with hand hygiene
The programme is designed to be self-directed and web based however, an option to print off the learning materials is available at registration.
The anticipated online learning time is 2-3 hours.
