Decontamination of Reusable Medical Devices (Local and Endoscopy)

The e-learning programme has been designed to support the education of all staff who are involved in some way with the decontamination of reusable medical devices.

The e-learning programme comprises 9 modules:

1. Overview
2. Acquiring Medical Devices
3. Microbiology
4. Protecting Yourself and Others
5. Cleaning and Disinfection
6. Inspection and Packaging
7. Sterilization
8. Transport Storage and Waste
9. Ensuring Quality

The programme is available as 3 options. Depending on your role, you may not require to complete all of the modules. The options are as follows:

Decontamination 1

Full programme (all 9 modules) for staff working in or with responsibility for decontamination. Should be completed by:

  • Staff in endoscopy e.g. Nurse Endoscopists, Healthcare Support Worker/ Operative/Technician
  • Staff in dental, podiatry or other areas e.g. Operators, Users, Managers
  • Undergraduate students (medical, dental, podiatry)

Other groups of staff e.g. Infection Control Nurses and Microbiologists who wish to learn more about decontamination may benefit from completion of the 9 modules that make up the programme.

Decontamination 2

Part programme (6 modules) for staff who use instruments processed in EDU, LDU, CDU or single use instruments. Should be completed by:

  • staff working in endoscopy e.g. theatre, ICT, ENT
  • Staff working in dental, podiatry or other areas

Decontamination 3

One module only for staff involved in or responsible for procurement of reusabe medical devices.

Registration and Access

This programme is available for self registration on learnPro NHS and learnPro community portals. Dental HEIs, general dental services and podiatry HEIs will be able to register on the programme through learnPro community portal.  To assist University and Colleges, we have developed an FAQ Support Guide for registering and accessing the community portal. 

General dental services will be supported via the NES infection control dental support team ( to register on the programme. Assistance may also be provided to podiatry HEIs if required.

Assessment and Certificate

It is estimated that each module will take one hour to complete.  Each module contains an  assessment comprising multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. 

At the end of each module you can print a completion certificate as a record of learning as evidence for your portfolio or training record. 

Verifiable CPD

Dental staff can claim one hour per module of verifiable CPD hours for the purposes of the General Dental Council.
