Cleanliness Champions

Welcome to this programme on: Promoting the Prevention and Control of Infection through Cleanliness Champions.

Please note: This course webpage has been updated in preparation for the launch of the new version being released in April 2012.  If you have started your Cleanliness Champions programme prior to 1 April 2012 please continue with the old version of the programme and refer to version 2 information on the webpages.

Promoting the prevention and control of infection is a key concern for health services in Scotland. At any one time, over 10% of patients in NHS Scotland hospitals will have a healthcare associated infection (HAI). Sick and vulnerable patients in the community are also at risk.

Taken together, this amounts to significant human and financial costs. HAI complicates recovery from illness and trauma, extends hospital stays, delays return to normal activity and increases stress on patients, families and carers. In financial terms, HAI cost NHS Scotland approximately £186 million per year.
