Mary Boyle, Programme Director

Mary has been leading on the multi-disciplinary Children and Young People's programme at NES since April 2002. Since joining the organisation, she has driven forward strategic educational initiatives designed with high stakeholder engagement and developed as National educational provision.

Prior to taking up her current post, Mary worked in the university sector. Research interests are cognitive development, research methodologies used with young children and participation of children and young people in health care policy making.

Her areas of specialist interest are Child Health, Learning Disabilities and the social and educational inclusion agendas.

Terri Carney, Programme Director for Paediatric Psychology

Terri works with NES as Programme Director of Paediatric Psychology (0.5 FTE) leading on the Psychosocial Inverventions in working with Children and Young People agenda. Terri's particular areas of interest include Chronic pain, Conversion disorder and medically unexplained symptoms.

She is currently also employed with NHS Ayrshire & Arran as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist leading a small Paediatric Psychology Service which provides Ayrshire wide service to all children and young people with physical health conditions.


Pauline Beirne, Educational Projects Manager - Child Health (job share)

Pauline has worked in the NHS in Scotland for 25 years, as a clinician and manager. Her clinical career involved her specialising in paediatrics with a special interest in Specific Language Impairment.  Pauline headed a large paediatric service for 10 years working closely with education services which resulted in her developing a wide knowledge base and understanding of collaborative practice, leadership and management.   She works both as a trainer and consultant and has the post of an Educational Project Manager role (Child Health) on a job share basis.

As an Educational Project Manager, Pauline has responsibility for managing educational developments in relation to children and young people agenda on behalf of NES and through liaison with relevant stakeholders in the NHS, Scottish Government, private & voluntary sectors and  higher  and further education institutions.

Caroline Mearns, Educational Projects Manager - Child Health

Caroline qualified as a registered general nurse (RGN) in 1985 and completed her registered sick children's nursing (RSCN) in 1989. She worked as a paediatric staff nurse, emergency nurse practitioner and charge nurse/ departmental manager in the A&E department at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh from 1989-2004. After obtaining an MBA, she moved into the education sector in 2004 obtaining a position as University lecturer (Child Health), at Napier University Edinburgh. Caroline has subsequently obtained her Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (PgCTLHE). She currently works at NHS Education for Scotland as an Educational Project Manager (WTE 0.5) and as a lecturer/ BSc Programme Leader (WTE 0.5) at Edinburgh Napier University.

Gwen Guignard, Project Officer

Gwen graduated from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh with an undergraduate Masters in International Business and Languages.  Following graduation, Gwen held the role of Account Coordinator in an SME based in Fife, managing international customer accounts within the vending telemetry industry.   Her interest in project and operational management brought her into her current role of Project Officer within NES.

Gwen provides operational project management support to the Children and Young People's Health Team.  Responsibilities include project planning, budget management, risk management and communication strategy development according to corporate guidelines for all NES children and young people's projects.
