What's new in Foundation Training?

What's new in VT Foundation Training?

On this page there are quick updates to The Pharmacy VT Foundation Training Programme

July 2017

Appraisal processes and procedures

From July 2017 Foundation Pharmacists need to ensure that they tell NES pharmacy that they have completed their 6, 12, 18 month appraisal plus they also need to submit their Progress report form at the same time that they inform of completion of their appraisal.

There is no need to submit a copy of the appraisal as we will review it within eportfolio.

An appraisal is still required just prior to submitting for assessment.

Assessment dates

The dates for Autumn and Spring assessments are detailed on the assessment web page.

The first round of final assessments using the principles of osceology went well and we will continue with this format.

Combined framework

The consultation re the combined framework is now closed.

This framework that will enable Foundation pharmacists to undertake their training flexibly in three areas of practice (if desired) will be shortly available on the NHS eportfolio.

Registration for the next training cohort is underway with a training start date of 1st Sept 2017. We will have for the first time, community, hospital and primary care pharmacists following a combined foundation framework. The community aspect and the primary care aspect of the cohort are in pilot phase with a review in February 2018.

It is now with the printer and will be launched on 20th Sept 2017, at NES Glasgow.

For more information re this cross sector, combined framework e mail or speak with your local Practice Education coordinator.

February 2017

The NES Pharmacy Vocational Foundation Training Programme has now been accredited by RPS.

NES Pharmacy is delighted to announce that the VT Foundation training programme has been accredited by The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS). This means that the curriculum and the quality management processes have met the standard required by RPS for the RPS Foundation training programme. A pharmacist completing their VT Foundation training in Scotland after 14th February 2017 and who is a member of RPS will be awarded the RPS Foundation certificate as well as the NES Pharmacy VT Foundation training certificate.

February 2017

There is now a combined Foundation framework for pharmacists working in both hospital and primary care. A community practice framework is under development. The new combined framework means that pharmacists working across more than one sector of practice can undertake Foundation training. There are Core competencies and Sector specific competencies within the one eportfolio and one framework.

Sept 2016

As from Sept 2016, the name of the training programme has changed from VT2 Training to VT Foundation Training. This change reflects the mapping of the current v7 of the competency framework to the RPS Foundation Framework.

In May 2017, the final face - to face final assessments are changing from being panel based to being based on OSCEs with one dedicated assessor per scenario. Further details will be released soon. Mock assessments will be available in each of the Boards to help prepare VT pharmacists for this new style of assessment.

Since Sept 2016, Heather Harrison has been employed to scope the development of VT Foundation Training for Community pharmacists with Seonaid McIntyre being employed from October 2016,  one day/ week to scope the development of VT Foundation for pharmacists working in the Primary Care setting. Both develoments will enable the development of a cross sector Vocational Training Programme.

Further information will be available after each of the 3 Working Groups have met.
