Hospital Practice

VT Foundation training is available for hospital  pharmacists and  those pharmacists working in joint or separate  hospital and primary care posts.

The training can be undertaken whether a pharmacist early in their career has a hospital post, a post in primary care or a post across both sectors.

Building on the RPS Foundation Framework, the Foundation Training Framework aims to provide a similarly structured training programme to those working in other areas of practice thus enabling the provision of standardised training within two to three years post qualification.

This training will increase professional confidence and competence whilst augmenting the capability and capacity of the primarycare pharmacy workforce to improve the quality of care for their patients as envisioned by Prescription for Excellence.

What is the training?

The training is a competency based training programme that takes approximately 2-3 years to complete. It equips pharmacists with a broad range of 'general' skills and enables them to gain a wide variety of experience within Pharmacy practice.

There are induction activities to be undertaken to get the pharmacist started.

What is the curriculum?

Pharmacists undertaking the training are required to complete a competency framework, undertake some underpinning knowledge and develop a structured reflective personal ePortfolio. The curriculum comprises of Core competencies that are undertaken by all VT Foundation pharmacists and some Sector specific competencies that are specific to hospital or primary care practice. The curriculum can be completed if a pharmacists is working in one area of practice or if they work across more than one area of practice.

There are Resources to help VT Foundation pharmacists complete their curriculum.

New for Foundation trainees is a training session A Taste of Leadership - a 1 day Leadership course and further 1 day course entitled Develop Yourself, Others and Service (SOS).

What support is available?

Pharmacists are supported throughout their training by a local tutor (registered as part of the training scheme), Practice Education Coordinators (NES) and Locality (regional) tutors.

What are the benefits of completing Foundation training?

Foundation training provides pharmacists early in their career with  opportunities to decide in which area they would like to specialise in the future. On completion of this Foundation Training pharmacists generally go on a study for a postgraduate qualification or they may register to start training within a Specialist area of practice (EPP training).

Evidence from the various training frameworks can be used as evidence for developing your RPS Faculty portfolio.

 Assessment

There is continual assessment by trainers and tutors and there is a final portfolio assessment which is followed by a face to face assessment at the end of training.
