As part of its Delivering Quality in Primary Care policy, the SGHD has recently allocated £6.6m for an IT network which will enable community Optometrists to refer patients' case notes and photographs of relevant eye conditions to a hospital for advice on whether formal referral is necessary.

As part of its Delivering Quality in Primary Care policy, the SGHD has recently allocated £6.6m for an IT network which will enable community Optometrists to refer patients' case notes and photographs of relevant eye conditions to a hospital for advice on whether formal referral is necessary. NES has funded part of the LOTT clinic to allow a Consultant Ophthalmologist to make these triage sessions into teaching occasions with images on plasma screens and space for 16 Optometrists or junior doctors to discuss the images and the differential diagnosis.
