Specialty Training

We share the responsibility for managing the delivery of postgraduate medical education and training (PGMET) with NHS Boards for the trainees within their employment and with universities for the first year of postgraduate training

NES is also responsible for quality managing PGMET programmes to standards required by the UK regulators - The General Medical Council (GMC).

We need a robust framework to support these activities and this means Specialty Training Boards.

These national groups are made up of Training Programme Directors, university representatives and Royal College representatives, as well as lay reps, HR teams and a liaison Dean.

Together the STB reviews and takes oversight of the programmes within their specialty remit, advising NES on recruitment issues, workforce planning and quality matters. At Deanery level there are specialty training committees reviewing the individual programmes at local level.
