Supporting Specialty Doctors
How NES is supporting the training and development needs of Staff Grade, Associate Specialist and Specialty (SAS) doctors and dentists
SAS doctors and dentists work across Scotland in a wide range of secondary care specialties. There are approximately 1300 SAS doctors and dentists in Scotland.
The new Specialty Doctor contract in 2008 recognised the need for time for appraisal and CPD, and all Specialty contracts should have at least one session of Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) per week to allow time for this.
The GMC has produced CPD guidance for all doctors, emphasising the importance of planning for career progression, patient safety and revalidation.
How NES is planning to support SAS doctors and dentists
NES is supporting a major project to improve professional development for SAS doctors and dentists. A network of SAS Educational Advisers is currently being recruited who will provide supporting information concerning the project to SAS doctors and dentists and the mandatory requirements when submitting applications to the SAS Professional Development Fund. Applicants should develop their bids in conjunction with their Clinical Director and Director of Medical Education and evidence how their bid for personal development will benefit their role, the Service they support and ultimately the patient at the conclusion of training. NES can also help with access to our generic courses.
