Healthcare Science

Regulation

A range of healthcare science staff are trained to meet the requirements for statutory HPC regulation or voluntary regulation. NES support for HCS training and education is also intended to ensure staff can achieve admission to the appropriate register of regulated professions.

Health Professions Council (HPC)

HPC registered staff are permitted use titles protected by law. Currently HPC regulates Biomedical Scientist and Clinical Scientist practitioners in the healthcare science group. Biomedical Scientist training is accredited through the Institute for Biomedical Science. Clinical Scientist training is accredited through the Association of Clinical Scientists.

HPC has a postition statement of the regulation of healthcare science staff.

Voluntary Registers

The following five groups are currently subject to voluntary registration with a shadow regulator. These have been accepted in principle by HPC but, until legislative processes are finalised, the five are not on the HPC statutory register of regulated professions.

Registration Council for Clinical Physiology (RCCP) covers clinical physiology subspecialties.

Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists (VRCT) covers technologist staff in medical physics and clinical engineering sub specialities.

Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Illustration Practitioners

Institute of Maxillofacial Prothetists and Technologists The intra oral aspects of maxillo-facial practitioners work is covered by the General Dental Council where registration as dental technician is required

College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists

Other HCS groups

Other HCS groups are at an earlier stage of their HPC application process and are voluntarily registered by the Voluntary Registration Council.
