Dental Nurse Induction

NHS Education for Scotland (NES) recognises the importance of ensuring all staff begin their work in a positive and supportive environment. NES provide a Dental Nurse Induction Programme, which is a blended learning package.

The NES Dental Nurse Induction Programme meets the requirements of the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) National Unit: Dental Nursing: Introduction to Safe Working Practices within the Dental Environment (SCQF Level 5).

Following securing employment as a trainee dental nurse, the NES Dental Nurse Induction Programme is a trainee dental nurse’s first step on their journey to registration as a Dental Nurse.

  1.  Register for the Dental Nurse Induction Programme:
  • log onto the NES Portal www.portal.scot.nhs.uk
  • create an account (providing home and work addresses)
  • book on a Dental Nurse Induction Study at your nearest dental education centre. Please note you must allow a sufficient period (approximately six weeks) before attending the Induction Study Day.

Following this portal booking the trainee dental nurse will be sent the 'Dental Nurse Induction Orientation Pack’ to complete before attending the Induction Study Day.

         2.  Complete the Dental Nurse Induction Programme: Orientation Pack

 The Orientation Pack has a series of tasks that must be completed prior to attending the Induction study day.  The tasks cover four of the most important aspects of their role:

* Professionalism

* Health & Safety

* Infection Control & Decontamination

* Medical Emergencies

The various tasks within each of the sections require trainees to undertake some research and investigation through reviewing websites and engaging in discussion with colleagues in the practice. Upon completion of this pack the trainee dental nurse should have a very clear idea of their role and responsibilities as a dental nurse.

    3. Attend The Dental Nurse Induction Study Day

The Induction study day will consolidate in-practice learning and research towards completing an online assessment at the end of the study day, at which a pass of 65% is required. If a re-sit is required a date will be arranged for them to visit the centre to complete the assessment.

Students who successfully complete all aspects of the Dental Nurse Induction Programme will be awarded the SQA National Unit: Dental Nursing: Introduction to Safe Working Practices within the Dental Environment (SCQF Level 5).

 4. Register to undertake a recognised dental nurse training programme

The General Dental Council (GDC) states that Dental Nurses must either be registered or be undertaking a recognised training programme that will lead to registration.  Providing entry requirements have been met, the trainee dental nurse will be eligible to register for NES’ Dental Nurse Training Programme - SVQ and PDA in Dental Nursing.
