Continuing Professional Development
We deliver a variety of Continuing Professional Development opportunities for the dental team enabling them to keep up to date and deliver quality patient care
NES develops, organises and delivers CPD for the whole dental
team. Some are delivered as team training events and some are
profession specific. Education and training can be delivered
at regional postgraduate centres or in your practice.
All our courses comply with GDC verifiable CPD requirements and are
eligible for CPD Allowance for General Dental Practitioners who
comply. Information on courses available is publicised on the
NES Portal. Booking courses is also done via the
Portal.
We also approve non-NES training and education through our Other
Approved Courses approval process for course
organisers. Education and training providers who wish
to apply for CPDA approval should contact their regional
postgraduate administrator for advice on the procedure. In
general, attendance at courses outside Scotland will not be
approved for CPDA. Anyone wishing to attend a course outside
Scotland will have to apply to the Postgraduate Dean for permission
before the course date detailing the justification for attendance.
No courses held outwith the UK will be approved.
Lecture based courses
Generally provided in Regional Postgraduate centres for those topics that lend themselves to this format of delivery. They are commonly combined with some interactive group activities to help achieve the learning outcomes.
Small group teaching
Many courses lend themselves to small group teaching. For many it will be the subject matter that will lend itself to being taught in small groups to facilitate interactive learning and participant participation. 'Hands on' courses will also be taught in small groups because of the logistics of teaching. These are practical clinical courses either on patients, phantom heads or manikins. Courses involving patients will require participants to be granted clinical access to Health Board patients well in advance of the course. You will be informed of the procedure once you have booked onto a course.
In-Practice education
For many topics delivered to all the dental team the best place for them to be delivered is in the practice setting. As it is in this setting that dental care will be provided it makes sense to locate learning within that setting. For some practices it will also be easier to organise in the practice rather than the practice team having to attend a regional postgraduate centre. The practice will require facilities suitable to the training event. To organise an in-practice CPD event please contact your regional CPD tutor who's details are available in the Contact us section.
Distance Learning
We are beginning to develop some distance learning packages for either individual use or to facilitate in-practice team training events. Information about details of packaged available will be on the Dental Portal. If you have any ideas on areas we should be considering developing distance or e-Learning packages please let us know via the Contact us section.
Quality Assurance
It is important for NES as an education provider to maintain the quality of the educational experiences we provide. When you book onto a course you are given the opportunity to fill out a pre-course evaluation via Portal - Evaluation. This enables presenters to target the course on areas that have been identified by participants as their greatest learning needs. After you have attended a course you will fill out a post course evaluation also on Portal. This is your opportunity to give us feedback on whether the course delivers its aims, objectives and educational outcomes. We use this information to keep our courses current and relevant and to identify any aspects that may need changed. This allows us to continuously improving our educational delivery
