Dysphagia DVD Drinks

If you have difficulty drinking and swallowing…

This video will help you follow your speech and language therapist's advice. Only watch the video if you have seen the speech and language therapist first.

Watch:

  1. The "introduction overview".
  2. The "drinks introduction" clip (see below).
  3. The clip that matches the advice you have been given (see below).

Remember:

  • All your drinks should be thickened
  • Thickening your drinks slows them down
  • Slower drinks give your swallowing muscles more time
  • A safer swallow helps drinks "go down the right way"
  • Thickened drinks help keep you as safe as possible from choking and chest infections

Information for Allied Health professionals

Advise the person with dysphagia and their family/carers to watch the introduction first and then this drinks introduction information before watching the clip specific to the consistency you are advising. You may also want to ask them to watch the interviews with the AHPs and with the carers for more information. The video has been designed to supplement not replace your advice and the usual ways that you provide information with handout leaflets etc.
