Changes that are improving patient care have been introduced by senior charge nurse Pat McGeever as a direct result of the NES education and development framework.
Pat is in charge of the elderly admission unit at Rosslynlee Hospital near Edinburgh. She learned of a new approach to working with older people and their families -the Senses Framework - as part of the Leading Better Care educational programme. It has now been incorporated into the work of the unit.
"The programme introduced me to the Senses Framework which proposes that the best care for older people occurs when the patient, relatives, staff and students are all involved in the creation of a set of 'senses' - security, continuity, belonging, purpose, achievement and significance," said Pat.
"An important part of the programme involved applying the Framework in my workplace as an effective strategy for implementing and evaluating change aimed at achieving relationship-centred care."
Pat has made full use of the educational opportunities she has been given to identify a new approach to care that is helping to improve the quality of the services provided to patients and their families. "This approach to care helps create an environment where everyone feels valued. If nurses can feel and impart the senses to their patients, relatives and colleagues, then patient care is enhanced," she said.
