As part of its Delivering Quality in Primary Care policy, the SGHD has recently allocated £6.6m for an IT network which will enable community Optometrists to refer patients' case notes and photographs of relevant eye conditions to a hospital for advice on whether formal referral is necessary.

In the first joint education initiative of its kind in Scotland, NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) have produced an educational resource for the entire health and social services workforce in Scotland. Entitled Informed about Dementia: improving practice, the DVD is an important milestone in achieving the aims of Scotland’s National Dementia Strategy and has been fully endorsed by Alzheimer Scotland and the Scottish Dementia Working Group (SDWG), the national campaigning group run for and by people with dementia.

The General Medical Council is consulting on how best to improve the training and approval of those doctors who are involved in the training of junior doctors. GP trainers are already approved and GP trainees show higher satisfaction with their training.
The GMC are looking for views on how to improve the quality of training and the role of the trainer.

Dr David Felix has been confirmed as Dean for Postgraduate Dental Education for NHS Education for Scotland (NES). He takes up the role with immediate effect and takes over from Dr Jim Rennie who retired earlier in the year.
